As excitement builds for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the upcoming prequel already in post-production, the focus shifts away from dragons and wars to the heart of George R.R. Martin’s world: the characters. Centered on Dunk and Egg, the series promises a more intimate, character-driven narrative—something fans have been longing for after the spectacle of Game of Thrones. Following creative clashes with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal, Martin is steering A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in a fresh direction. By prioritizing personal journeys over grand battles, the show brings back the storytelling that made A Song of Ice and Fire so beloved. With no dragons to distract, it’s a return to the grounded, intricate narrative that fans adore.

The Anticipation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and the Winds of Waiting

There’s an air of cautious excitement surrounding A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, which is already deep into post-production. If you’re one of the many fans who’s followed George R.R. Martin’s journey from A Song of Ice and Fire to the sprawling shows of Game of Thrones, you’ll know the highs and lows that come with adapting Martin’s intricate world to the screen. But in this new show, there’s something refreshing in its more grounded approach.

Ser Duncan the Tall

Martin has been actively involved in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on his novellas, The Hedge Knight. If you’re wondering what exactly sets it apart from the grandiose spectacle of Game of Thrones—which, let’s be honest, often leaned more into dragons and battle sequences than we’d like to admit—A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises a more intimate, character-driven narrative. Gone are the massive armies, city-storming invasions, and fire-breathing dragons. Instead, the show will delve into the journeys of Dunk and Egg, two characters whose tales feel more like classic coming-of-age stories set against the backdrop of a political landscape rife with intrigue.

Friction & House of the Dragon

But don’t get it twisted. Martin himself admitted that the transition from House of the Dragon wasn’t without its friction, especially with showrunner Ryan Condal. In a recently deleted blog post, Martin shared some candid thoughts on the collaboration with Condal, admitting that they had different approaches to bringing the Targaryen history to life.

“I’ve been in the writer's room, I’ve made suggestions, but House of the Dragon had its own flow, and we were pulling in different directions sometimes.”

Martin doesn’t shy away from the challenges he faced with Condal, but also acknowledges that House of the Dragon found its own way. The drama between the Targaryens made for compelling television, but it’s clear from Martin’s words that he wasn’t always completely in agreement with the direction. He’s passionate about keeping the spirit of A Song of Ice and Fire intact, and that’s something that seems to be running smoother with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Martin’s main gripes weren’t without merit if you ask me. Leaving little boy Maelor out of the show renders a lot of consecutive consequences of the book simply impossible. And those consequences are not negligible, but very much essential to the end game of the story.

The Winds of Winter

And then, of course, there’s Winds of Winter, the book we’ve all been waiting for. In typical Martin fashion, he offered a self-deprecating laugh about the ongoing delay, quipping that the only predictable thing about Winds of Winter is that it
“won’t be released when you think it will be.”
But for those who are keeping the faith, he reassured fans that progress is ongoing.
“I’m working on it,”
he says. Yes, we’ve heard that before, but however hard it is to admit, let’s be honest—it’s the kind of reassurance we need, even if it doesn’t quite take the sting out of the wait.

No dragons, but plenty of action

Smaller Scope Might Prove a Winner With Audiences

While many fans have longed for the return of the dragons or the blood-soaked grandeur that made Game of Thrones a cultural phenomenon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a chance to scale things back. By focusing on personal journeys and the quiet moments between characters, the show could give us something more intimate. There’s real beauty in stories where political intrigue and character development take precedence over fiery spectacle. As Martin said himself,
“It’s going to be different. It’s going to be fresh.”
That’s the sort of change that can reignite a franchise, bringing us back to the core of why we fell in love with Westeros in the first place.

After all, if there’s one thing that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can teach us, it’s that not every tale in Martin’s world needs dragons and epic battles to be compelling. It’s about the connections between people, the moments that feel just as heavy as a battle for the throne. When Martin crafts his worlds, he’s always been about the nuances—the personalities, the betrayals, the friendships, and the quiet fights for power. There’s something wonderfully human about these stories, and if anything, this new show might just remind us of that.

As for Winds of Winter? We wait, knowing that when it does arrive, the journey will have (better) been worth it. Just like with the show, the story Martin is building has always been about patience, craft, and a deep understanding of what makes us tick as humans. The dragons can wait. We’re in it for the characters. I, for, one, can barely wait for the Laughing Storm…

HBO has officially confirmed that a Game of Thrones movie is in development, sparking excitement and speculation among fans of George R.R. Martin’s sprawling fantasy universe. Though still in the early stages, the announcement hints at a massive theatrical spectacle that could expand the beloved series in unprecedented ways. While no director, cast, or writer has been announced yet, HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery seem determined to explore the franchise’s cinematic potential.

But what story could possibly justify the leap from the small screen to theaters? In my opinion, the possibilities are endless, but the smartest choice lies in Westeros’ deep, untapped history—or even beyond it.

A Cinematic Opportunity: Why Both Westeros and Essos Deserve the Big Screen

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s focus on expanding major franchises aligns perfectly with the epic scale of Game of Thrones. As CEO Casey Bloys explained, the movie must offer a story worthy of the big screen—a spectacle unlike anything seen in the original show or its spin-offs. Westeros and its world of intrigue, war, and dragons are tailor-made for this kind of treatment.

Battle of the Redgrass field – 1st Blackfyre Rebellion
Jose Daniel Cabrera Pena

The Game of Thrones universe is vast, with many historical events and legendary figures ripe for exploration. The original series introduced us to a rich and complex world, but much of its history remains untouched on screen. Fans are clamoring for stories like those of the Blackfyre Rebellions, the Young Dragon’s conquest of Dorne, or the tumultuous (and dare I say spicy) reign of Aegon IV and his scandalous affairs. Each of these tales offers a goldmine of drama, intrigue, and large-scale action.

The Case for Valyria: A Spectacle Unlike Any Other

In my opinion, the most tantalizing choice for a movie would be to delve into (perhaps) the rise and (definitely) the fall of Valyria. The fabled Freehold, with its dragonlords, towering spires and magic beyond imaging. A sprawling empire, and an ultimate cataclysm. This would offer a story that is both visually stunning and narratively rich. Picture a world of immense cities, powerful sorceries, and dozens of dragons flying across ultimately doomed skies—a cinematic spectacle that could rival the scale of The Lord of the Rings and Avatar.

Valyria
By tommyscottart

A show set in Valyria would amount to a 3D modelling, CGI nightmare if it were to be multiple episodes each season. To “realistically” portray Valyria they would have to transport us to a world SO different from ours it would be unrecognizable. And they would have to do it for each episode. Everyone knew we weren’t getting that. But now, with a movie budget… who’s to say? Demonstrating all the ancient Eastern splendor on the big screen for two hours suddenly becomes a real possibility.

Valyria’s downfall, often referred to as the Doom, is one of the most mysterious and dramatic events in Martin’s lore. A film exploring Valyria’s golden age and its fiery collapse could provide a fresh perspective on the world of Game of Thrones, without upsetting too many of the ongoing plotlines. Introducing audiences to a bygone era of unmatched power and hubris, I think you’d actually have to try to make that fail at the Box Office. With the right creative team and a blockbuster budget, this thing could easily be printing money.

Avoiding the Obvious: Why Robert’s Rebellion Isn’t the Answer

Some fans might argue for a movie about Robert’s Rebellion, the war that set the stage for the events of Game of Thrones. While this story is undeniably compelling, I think it’s a less exciting choice for a feature film. We’ve already seen much of this era through the books, show flashbacks, and character recollections. Beyond a few gaps, such as Lyanna Stark’s abduction or the Tourney at Harrenhal, Robert’s Rebellion doesn’t offer enough new material to justify a full-length movie.

Instead, HBO should seize the opportunity to tell a story that feels fresh and ambitious, one that explores uncharted territories of the Game of Thrones mythos.

The Path Forward: A World of Possibilities

The potential stories aren’t limited to Valyria or historical wars. Westeros itself offers a treasure trove of narratives. Maegor the Cruel’s bloody reign, the rise of King Jaehaerys I and his golden age of peace, or the chaos of the Blackfyre Rebellions would each bring something unique to the table. Even A Song of Ice and Fire’s pre-Westerosi history, such as the tales of the Children of the Forest or the Age of Heroes could provide foundation for an awe-inspiring film.

A Box Office Goldmine?

If HBO and Warner Bros. can assemble the right creative team—writers and directors who understand both the source material and the cinematic medium—this movie could be a cultural phenomenon. With the current success of House of the Dragon and the ongoing expansion of the franchise, a well-executed movie could cement Game of Thrones as one of the most versatile and enduring fantasy franchises of all time.

Valyria, Blackfyres, Maegor, or even a wholly original tale—the key lies in bold storytelling and unforgettable visuals. As a fan, I can only hope they aim high and deliver a film worthy of George R.R. Martin’s (just make sure to properly involve that guy ffs) legacy. Done right, this could be box office gold.

Let’s Not Get Ahead of Ourselves

Speculation is swirling about the possibility of an Arya Stark spinoff following reports of George R.R. Martin meeting with Maisie Williams for a “secret project.” Fans of Game of Thrones might see this as a promising continuation, especially since Arya’s character largely emerged unscathed from the show’s lambasted final seasons. However, there are reasons to approach the idea with skepticism.

The Arya Problem: From Tragic Survivor to Superhuman Assassin

In the books, Arya Stark’s story is a poignant, often gut-wrenching tale of a skinny young child forced into a hard world where moral ambiguity is about the best one could hope for. Most of the times it’s abject horror and extreme violence directed against the weak. Her experiences in Braavos—training with the Faceless Men—are deeply rooted in themes of identity, loss, and the psychological cost of her transformation. These moments highlight the tragedy of a child being shaped into a weapon, a narrative typical to George R.R. Martin’s signature realism and bittersweet storytelling.

I admit, rooted for her when she was forced into violence as opposed to becoming a victim (basically something the Starks have been doing for thousands of years) and yet felt the tragedy of it all because she was so young, quickly getting used to the vile truths of the world high born “ladies” don’t often get to witness. On reread, her struggles (and that of Dani who is about 13 at the start of the story) somehow reminded me of Beasts of No Nation, a very sad film about child soldiers and how harmful being groomed into violence can be for a child’s psyche. Hell, adults even have a hard time coping with it.

At the risk of sounding cliche, violence can be an excellent way to add weight and the threat of consequences for your characters. But violence shouldn’t be glorified. That’s where I think book Arya and show Arya differ. In the show you’re supposed cheer for her as some terminator vengeance bot who settles scores for the good guys in awesome ways. In the books it’s… well, more nuanced than that. She is as much a victim as the ones she brutalizes.

The last time we saw Arya in the books she had already grown numb to the violence and the cold blooded murder, honestly though, how could she not have been? She even developed a sort of coping mechanism to justify her actions. Whether she went over the line killing Daeron is debatable as well. The Faceless Men obviously try to use her to their end but by that time she already proves hardened and difficult to leash, likely taking their lessons, adding in some skinchanger sauce and striking out back across the pond. All in all, there seems to be more to her and her Braavos arc. My guess is she will take away more than just a capacity to better do violence.

Nothing quite like a pre-dirty-canal gut wound…

In contrast, the TV show speedran their way to presenting Arya as an unstoppable force, almost a superhero by the later seasons. From effortlessly dispatching the Waif (who was supposedly better trained and more experienced) and going from some refreshing E. coli baths in the refuse-laden canals of Braavos with several open dagger wounds to singlehandedly slaying the Night King in a scene that felt unearned because it wasn’t built up in any way. All ’cause of some doofus waking up one day and thinking “Jon killing the Night King” just does not feel “quite right to us.” The character’s complexity was flattened in favor of a few crowd-pleasing moments.

This transformation, while perhaps entertaining for some, alienated others who felt the show glorified her actions rather than exploring their consequences. I confess, I enjoy the Punisher for its mindnumbing over-the-top brutality. I love watching Castle as he creatively and gorily plows a bloody path through the hordes of nameless (and afterward mostly faceless) goons as much as the next man. But when I want to turn my brain off and let the club-waving caveman inside have a go I’ll tune into that, not this.

Arya was more than that. There was a deep tragedy to a lost innocence and innate courage/empowerment weighing against each other in the scales of her morality. And in the books there still is. She develops her own code of justice to empower herself and avoid victimhood. Her premeditated murder of Daeron for deserting the Watch mirrors Ned’s execution of Gareth. But ultimately, Daeron was a kid as well, making his own choices, however stupid or immoral they were… it’s all debatable come fight me in the comments over it.

Would a spinoff focus on Arya’s internal struggles, or would it double down on her “unstoppable assassin” persona? If it’s the latter, the depth and nuance that made her compelling in the early seasons and books could be lost entirely. And I’m not exactly a glass half full guy on this one. Though I always stand ready to be pleasantly surprised.

Can Maisie Williams Carry a Show on Her Own?

Maisie Williams undoubtedly delivered a memorable performance as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, but it’s worth questioning whether she’s equipped to shoulder an entire series on her own. Arya worked best as part of an ensemble, with her story intertwining with other characters and playing off the broader narrative of Westeros and Essos as a whole.

While Williams is most definitely a talented actor, her career post-Thrones has leaned toward supporting roles and indie projects rather than leading major productions. This isn’t necessarily a critique of her ability, but leading a show of this magnitude requires a magnetic screen presence that can sustain audience interest week after week. Whether she has that star power remains untested, and skepticism is fair—though, of course, it would be wonderful to be proven wrong. Untried doesn’t mean incapable.

A Thin Foundation for a Spinoff, Though Not Without Opportunity

Arya’s ending in Game of Thrones—setting sail to discover what lies west of Westeros—was intriguing, but it wasn’t much more than a blank slate. Turning that premise into a compelling series is no small feat. What’s west of Westeros? How does Arya evolve as a character? Arya’s supposed journey would surely echo that of Elissa Farman’s hundreds of years earlier. Plenty of interesting stuff given the right showrunner. What challenges would she face that don’t reduce her to a caricature of a one-dimensional swashbuckler?

The only way I see it is that it has to shed light on a few MAJOR key mysteries plaguing the minds of us loreheads. This series could go a ways toward explaining the oily black stone found all over the place. Asshai, the largest known city by far (its size is that of Volantis, Qarth, King’s Landing, and Oldtown combined). Yet, it is built entirely out of the strange black substance, with barely anyone living in it, save for the most taboo sorcerers and practitioners of blood magic and all the forbidden arts. They lack a source of clean water and children and animals don’t even seem to do well within its walls. Who could construct such an enormous city and why would they do it out of poisonous black stone entirely? They probably wouldn’t. Nobody goes through the effort of building a city that big without intention to fill it to capacity (which the poisonous stone prevents) A point Youtube personality David Lightbringer and others like Grey Waste Tim have brought forth many times. Likely is has been blighted, corrupted over time due to some cataclysmic event.

Such an event could very well have been responsible for bringing down the Great Empire of the Dawn (likely the builders of Asshai because it is in their reach and there are no writings of any similar super powers capable of such a herculean project around that time). The speculation here being that the Great Empire already circumnavigated the globe in its heyday maybe even traveling from Asshai (its large harbor is ideally suited for shipping lanes in the ultimate East) and arriving in Westeros from the Sunset Sea in the West (founding House Dayne and the first iteration of Oldtown way before the First Men perhaps?)

There are many arcane secrets about magic and dragons to be revealed inside Asshai and beyond. And beyond would be west of Westeros if we’re talking a globe. Though on the other side, I think George would like to keep a lot of that shrouded in mystery… (OT: The first time I saw Alien as a kid I was so intrigued by the ancient spaceship and its occupants, my head ran wild with speculation of what it all could have meant. Then Prometheus rolls around and it turns out its a couple of roided up Michelangelo statues with anger issues and thus many years of intrigue were deflated in a few dissappointing seconds)

If this show is brought as a flat swashbuckling pirate story though, Arya’s isolated storyline takes a huge risk in feeling disconnected from the intricate political weave that defined Game of Thrones. Without the intrigue of court politics, rival factions, and the interplay of multiple perspectives, any continuation stands at risk of feeling hollow.

Lessons from the Jon Snow Spinoff

The Jon Snow spinoff was shelved because the creative team couldn’t crack the story, which should be a cautionary tale for any potential Arya series. A strong premise isn’t enough—it requires a clear vision, compelling narrative arcs, and the ability to do justice to one of the most beloved (and scrutinized) franchises in TV history. And they better keep George in the loop as well, prevent all this static between Showrunner and original writer like we got on House of the Dragon.

Proceed With Caution

While the prospect of returning to Arya’s story might excite some fans, HBO and George R.R. Martin must tread carefully. Arya Stark is a character with immense potential, but mishandling her narrative could alienate fans who are already wary after the show’s rocky conclusion. And without the intricate storytelling that defined the early seasons of Game of Thrones, any spinoff risks feeling like a pale shadow of its predecessor. We all saw this when House of the Dragon was received with a warm welcome in its first season. Though now arrived in its second season that spell seems fragile (if not already broken) and they are skating on mighty thin ice…

It’s fine to hope for the best—but let’s not forget the lessons of the past. Fans deserve a continuation that lives up to the rich world Martin created, not just another empty spectacle.

The “Game of Thrones” spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight” is gearing up for a big release in 2025. This new series will get into the early adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, set about a century before the events of “Game of Thrones”. It will explore their journey across Westeros during a time when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne. If the novels are anything to go by, fans may expect a more light-hearted sort of tale, though by no means bloodless.

IN SHORT:

Casting for the roles of Dunk & Egg finished

Black Mirror director Owen Harris taken on

A look into the future of Dunk & Egg and Winds

Impressive roster of new actors cast

Ser Duncan the Tall

Casting

Casting for the series has been announced, with Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell set to play the central characters of Dunk and Egg. The series has generated significant excitement, promising to bring to life the beloved “Dunk and Egg” novellas by George R.R. Martin, providing a deeper look into the history and lore of the Game of Thrones universe.

Filming for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is expected to begin in early june 2024, following a delay brought on by the SAG-AFTRA strike. This project joins “House of the Dragon” as one of the few greenlit ASOIAF-related projects, with others still in development. HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery are highly optimistic about the potential success of this new addition to their lineup, hoping to capture the audience’s interest as they did with previous series.

George R. R. Martin Chimes in

On his Not A Blog website, Martin writes: “Things are moving along nicely with our Dunk & Egg spinoff, HBO’s adaptation of my novella THE HEDGE KNIGHT.” He goes on to declare: “Most of the auditions — not all, but most — are done, and we should be able to announce some more cast members shortly. We have our Tanselle, Steely Pate, Baelor Breakspear, the Laughing Storm, a couple of Fossoways, Aerion Brightflame (boo, hiss), Prince Maekar, and the rest,“

It would be interesting to see the casting revealed for Aerion Brightflame (update: Finn Bennett was cast for the role… if he matches even half Aerion’s assholery were fine) in particular. Given the guy’s an absolute dirtbag of the highest order, I’m sure they’ll find someone to do him justice as casting has been very much on point so far.

Furthermore Martin comments on the format and mentions his intentions to join the set in juli: “THE HEDGE KNIGHT will be a lot shorter than GAME OF THRONES or HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, with a much different tone… but it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe Ira Parker and his team are doing a great job. I hope to visit the shoot come July, when I swing by Belfast on my way to the worldcon in Glasgow.“

Director

Things are moving along nicely indeed, it seems, as a director has already been commissioned. On that, George writes: “Oh, and we have our director as well: Owen Harris, a terrific British director whose credits include helming “San Junipero,” my all time favorite episode of BLACK MIRROR. Owen will direct three of our six episodes.” Hearing that, I’d venture to say the property is probably in good hands.

Beyond the Hedge Knights & Winds Progress

Depending on its success (which, if the books are done justice, is pretty much guaranteed imho) the next two books are being tranlated to the screen as well: “The show will make its debut next year… and if it does well, THE SWORN SWORD and THE MYSTERY KNIGHT will follow. By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish THE WINDS OF WINTER).“

Thus spake George. And so he will be continuing the Dunk and Egg saga as soon as he’s done with Winds of Winter, so I for one am stoked to see those hit the shelves sometime these next three decades (only kidding George, but hurry up though).

UPDATE

New Casting Announcements Just In

HBO continues to build excitement for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, the highly anticipated prequel series set in the world of Westeros. Following the earlier announcement of the series, additional casting details have been revealed, adding more depth to the growing ensemble.

New Cast Members Include:

Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) as Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen

Bertie Carvel (Dalgliesh) as Baelor Targaryen

Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) as Tanselle

Daniel Ings (Freddy from The Gentlemen) as Ser Lyonel Baratheon

Sam Spruell (Fargo) as Maekar Targaryen

One particular casting choice that stands out to me is Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, the notoriously unhinged “Brightflame” of House Targaryen. Bennett’s performance in True Detective: Night Country demonstrated a layered intensity that I think has the capability to brilliantly transform into the fiery, dangerous, and frankly insane Aerion. And not to forget, probably one of the most cruel Targaryen princes out of the entire dynasty right up their with Maegor. This is a complex character to bring to life, but I’m intrigued and optimistic about Bennett’s ability to pull it off.

Behind the Scenes

The series is in the capable hands of Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, who serves as both writer and executive producer alongside House of the Dragon’s Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw also join as executive producers, ensuring continuity in tone and vision for the world of Westeros. There was some pretty loud static between Martin and Condall and I hope things have been smoothened out to ultimately deliver the best product in the end lol.

Episode Count and Directors

The first season will consist of six episodes (at least for now). Direction duties are split between Sarah Adina Smith (Hanna, Lessons in Chemistry), who will helm three episodes, and Owen Harris (Black Mirror, Mrs. Davis), who will take on the remaining three. Harris is also serving as an executive producer for the series, promising a consistent creative vision across the episodes.

Where’s That Trailer Doggonit?

HBO has shared brief clips of the upcoming show, giving viewers a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. Unfortunately, fans eager for a closer look will have to wait for an official trailer.
